8.3Question types, study strategy and exam technique#

In brief

Unit X of Paper 1 usually carries about five questions (ten marks), so the goal is not to memorise everything but to recognise the pattern of each question type.

  • Memory questions
  • Concept questions
  • Analysis questions
  • Study strategy
  • Exam technique

Unit X of Paper 1 usually carries about five questions (ten marks), so the goal is not to memorise everything but to recognise the pattern of each question type. NTA tends to mix three kinds of items. Memory questions ask for a name, year, place or body (who founded Vikramshila, when was the UGC Act passed). Concept questions ask what a term means (autonomous college, deemed university, credit transfer, Kohlberg's stages). Analysis questions ask you to compare, sequence or judge (match the commission with its main recommendation, arrange events chronologically, assertion and reason, statement-based items).

Study strategy. Read the narrative once to build the storyline, then revise only the tables and bullet lists. For years and names, use the memory aids given. For commissions and policies, always learn the triple: who chaired it, which year, what was its signature recommendation. For regulators, learn the triple: body, Act and year, domain. Spend the most time on topics 2 and 6, because those produce the most questions and change the most often.

Exam technique. In match-the-following items, solve the pairs you are sure of first; usually that eliminates two options. In chronology items, anchor on one fixed year (for example 1854 Wood's Despatch, 1948 Radhakrishnan Commission, 1964 Kothari Commission, 1986 NPE, 2020 NEP) and place the rest around it. In assertion and reason items, first decide whether each statement is true independently, then ask whether R actually explains A.
